What Are Nicotine Salts?

Do you own a low-powered or cheap vaporizer but want the full experience vaping as those with more expensive high-powered mods would? There may be an option for you.

Nicotine salts might be what you are looking for. Nicotine salts are type of nicotine e-liquid in which the nicotine molecules in the liquid are bound to another organic molecule. Standard PG or VG e-liquids have their nicotine in a freebase form. This allows the nicotine to be more easily vaporized, whereas in a nicotine salt e-liquid, the nicotine molecules are bound to another compound.

While not as easily vaporized, nicotine salt e-liquids are more readily absorbed by the lungs, thus the user is able to get more nicotine with fewer puffs. It is a closer simulation of smoking conventional cigarettes.

Nicotine salt e-liquids typically have a much higher nicotine content than standard freebase e-liquid. They are purposely manufactured so you can do this without diminishing your vaping experience because nicotine salts are much gentler on the lungs.

In theory, one could vape a nicotine salt e-liquid with a nicotine level which would be harsh, if not non-vapeable in most instances because binding the nicotine molecules to an organic molecule reduces the pH (measure of acidity in a liquid) of the e-liquid. Reducing the pH reduces irritation of the throat and lungs which can be part and parcel of the experience in a freebase nicotine e-liquid with a nicotine strength over 24mg.

Nicotine salt e-liquids are only suitable for low-powered vape pens. Due to the high nicotine levels, they are not recommended for use in vape pens or mods that use a sub-ohm coil as they will cause an unpleasant amount of nicotine to be absorbed. They are perfect for low-powered vape pens, allowing the user to have an experience comparable to use of a much more powerful device.
